HIST 216:  History of South Africa

This course examines the history of South Africa from the precolonial period to the present. Topics include the historical dynamics of colonial settlement and conflict; industrialization and modernization after the discovery of diamonds and gold; patterns of racial segregation that consequently developed in South African society; and, finally, the ideas and activism that challenged racism and apartheid to bring democracy in 1994. This course introduces a variety of sources for approaching South Africa’s history, with the additional goal of raising questions about methodology and historical analysis for students.  Prof. Lee TR 9:30-10:45 [GM1, SS]
